The katha in English

The same story, retold in simple English.

Once the nine planets argued over who was greatest and went to King Vikramaditya for judgement. The king placed seats of nine metals – gold, silver, bronze, copper and so on – and ranked the planets by metal. Shani's iron seat was last. Displeased, Shani warned: 'O King, during my Sade Sati you will know my power.'

When Shani's period began, disaster followed. Disguised as a horse trader, Shani led the king to a foreign land, where he was falsely accused of stealing a necklace, had his hands and feet cut off and ended up turning an oil-press for an oilman. Even so the king remained patient; one night he sang Raga Deepak so beautifully that the local princess insisted on marrying him.

When the Sade Sati ended, Shani appeared. The king asked him never to give anyone such suffering. Shani promised that whoever keeps his fast on Saturdays and listens to this katha would not suffer during his period. He restored the king's limbs, the necklace was found, and Vikramaditya returned to Ujjain with honour.
