The katha in English

The same story, retold in simple English.

An old woman plastered her courtyard with cow dung every Sunday morning, worshipped Surya Dev, offered bhog and ate only once. Her home was full of blessings. She used dung from her neighbour's cow. Jealous of her prosperity, the neighbour began tying the cow indoors.

Without dung the old woman could not perform her Sunday puja and went to bed hungry and sad. That night Surya Dev appeared in her dream, praised her devotion and gave her a cow and calf whose dung turned to gold. The neighbour cunningly began swapping the golden dung for ordinary dung.

Surya sent a storm, so the old woman tied the cow inside and received the gold herself. The neighbour complained to the king, who took the cow to his palace – where it filled the palace with foul dung. In a dream the king learned the truth, returned the cow and ordered everyone in the kingdom to keep the Sunday vrat.
