The same story, retold in simple English.
On Diwali, Shri Ram returned to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile and his victory over Ravana. The people lit the whole city with lamps to welcome him – which is why it became the festival of lights.
A folk katha tied to Lakshmi Puja tells of a merchant's daughter who offered water to a peepal tree every day. Goddess Lakshmi, who dwelt in the tree, befriended her and promised to visit her home. The girl had her father clean the house, lit lamps everywhere and welcomed the goddess with honour.
Pleased, Lakshmi declared that she makes her home wherever there is cleanliness, light, truthfulness and respect. That is why on Diwali night homes are cleaned, lamps are lit, doors are kept open and Ganesh and Lakshmi are worshipped together.
How to observe the vrat, and its traditional benefits.
Clean and decorate the home with rangoli and diyas. At pradosh kaal worship Ganesh, Lakshmi and Kuber on a red cloth with a kalash, coins, kheel-batashe, lotus and sweets, chant Lakshmi mantras, perform the aarti and keep a lamp burning through the night.
Wealth, prosperity and harmony in the home for the year ahead.
