What the aarti says, in simple English.
Victory to you, Goddess Mahalakshmi – you pervade everything, in both the gross and the subtle. You dwell in Karveer (Kolhapur), mother of gods and sages, giver of boons to Shiva and beloved of Vishnu; Brahma was born from the lotus of your womb, and even the thousand-headed Shesh cannot finish singing your virtues. You hold the citron, mace and shield, radiant as the sun; a golden bowl of nectar shines in your hand; you wear a ruby girdle and bright garments, doe-eyed and moon-faced – mother of Kama himself. You are Tara, the unreachable Shakti, Gauri to Shiva's devotees; the Sankhya philosophers call you Prakriti, you are Gayatri, the seed and essence of the Vedas, and you appear as Padmavati to uphold dharma. River full of nectar, wash away sin and sorrow; destroy the fearsome demons and carry us across the ocean of worldly life; lift the veil of Maya from those who bow to you and show us your form of pure consciousness. Whatever crooked lines of karma Brahma may have written on my forehead, O Mother, wipe them away with the sole of your foot and wash them with the flowers at your feet – so prays Mukteshwar to the daughter of the Ocean of Milk.
Aartis are sung with small differences from region to region and family to family – if your family sings it differently, both are right.
