Meaning

What the aarti says, in simple English.

This aarti reads the Ramayana as an inner journey. Rama built the bridge of stones with great effort, destroyed Lanka – the subtle body – crushed the demons of desire and anger, and killed Ravana, the ego that says ‘I am the body’. Refrain: Victory to Rama, the knowledge of the Self – with true devotion we offer the aarti of the highest truth to the one whose every wish is fulfilled. Hanuman went first to find Sita, burned Lanka, killed Akshaya and Jambumali and came back carrying the flag of joy. Sita was freed by Rama's own power, so the Lord of the Raghus came back to Ayodhya; Bharata overflowed with joy and detachment and Mother Kaushalya came with the aarti. The unstruck sound roared, countless vanaras shouted, the sons of Dasharatha reached Ayodhya and the city was full of joy. Rama sits naturally on the throne, worshipped with the feeling ‘I am That’; the aarti of the natural state resounds with music – Madhavdas prays, ‘O Lord, remember me, do not forget me.’
