Vrat Katha
The same story, retold in simple English.
Chapter 1: At Naimisharanya the sages led by Shaunak asked Suta how people in Kali Yuga could easily be freed from suffering. Suta explained that Narad had once asked Lord Vishnu the same question. The Lord answered that worshipping him as Satyanarayan brings happiness in this life and liberation after it. The vrat can be kept on any day – especially Purnima – with faith, offering a prasad of banana, ghee, milk, wheat flour or sooji and sugar in 'sawaya' (one-and-a-quarter) measure.
Chapter 2: In Kashi lived a poor Brahmin who survived on alms. The Lord appeared to him as an old Brahmin and taught him the Satyanarayan puja. He performed it with faith, his poverty ended and his home filled with plenty. A woodcutter who happened by heard the katha, took prasad and vowed to do the puja himself. That day his wood sold for double the price, and he too found happiness through the vrat.
Chapter 3: King Ulkamukh and his queen were performing the puja on a riverbank when a merchant named Sadhu stopped and vowed to perform it if he were blessed with a child. A daughter, Kalavati, was born, but he kept postponing – 'at her wedding', then 'after my voyage'. After Kalavati's marriage he sailed with his son-in-law to trade. Because he broke his promise, misfortune followed: in King Chandraketu's kingdom both were falsely accused of theft and jailed, while poverty struck the family at home.
Chapter 4: At home, Kalavati saw the katha being performed at a neighbour's house, took prasad and told her mother Lilavati. Both performed the vrat with devotion. The Lord appeared in the king's dream and the merchants were released with honour. On the way home the Lord, disguised as an ascetic, asked what was in the boat. The merchant lied, 'only leaves and creepers' – and the cargo turned into leaves. When he begged forgiveness, the wealth returned. Hearing of their arrival, Kalavati rushed to meet her husband without taking prasad, and his boat sank. When she returned and took the prasad, he rose safely. From then on the family kept the vrat every Purnima.
Chapter 5: King Tungadhwaja, returning from a hunt, saw cowherds worshipping Satyanarayan under a tree but out of pride neither bowed nor accepted prasad. At home he found his hundred sons and his wealth destroyed. Realising his mistake, he went back, worshipped with the cowherds and accepted the prasad with humility. Everything was restored and he finally attained liberation. The lesson: never disrespect prasad, and always fulfil a vow once made.
How to observe the vrat, and its traditional benefits.
Clean the puja place, set up a chowki with a kalash, a picture of Satyanarayan and banana leaves. Worship Ganesh first, then the Navagraha and Satyanarayan with panchamrit, tulsi, flowers and fruit. Read or listen to all five chapters, perform the aarti 'Om Jai Lakshmi Ramana', and distribute the sawaya sheera/panjiri prasad to all present.
Removes poverty and obstacles, fulfils wishes and brings peace to the household.
