The katha in English

The same story, retold in simple English.

A Brahmin couple grieved that they had no child. The husband went to the forest to worship Hanuman, while the wife fasted at home every Tuesday, eating only after offering bhog to Hanuman. One Tuesday she could not prepare the bhog, so she vowed not to eat until the next Tuesday. After six days of fasting she fainted.

Pleased by her devotion, Hanuman appeared and gave her a radiant boy, saying he would serve her. She named him Mangal. When her husband returned he doubted where the child had come from, and one day pushed the boy into a well – yet when he came home, Mangal walked in smiling behind him.

That night Hanuman told the Brahmin in a dream that the child was his gift. The husband apologised to his wife and together they kept the Tuesday vrat all their lives. The katha teaches that Hanuman removes every hardship for those who hold to faith and self-discipline.
