Meaning

What the aarti says, in simple English.

Victory to Satyanarayan, kind to the humble – O Lord of Lakshmi, we wave the five-flamed lamp before you with devotion. Devotees worship you as prescribed, listen to the Purana, offer fragrances and flower garlands, and when they eat the prasad of wheat, ghee and sugar you are pleased. Long ago the Brahmin Shatananda kept this vrat; you removed his poverty and gave him liberation, and from him the vrat became known to everyone in Kali Yuga. The merchant Sadhu prayed to you for a child, but when his wish was fulfilled he became proud and did not keep his vow – he suffered for it until he remembered and kept the vrat, and you saved him. Kalavati forgot the prasad and ran to meet her husband, and his boat sank; King Angadhvaja also suffered and heard of the death of his hundred sons. When they worshipped again and took the prasad, Kalavati saw her husband's boat rise and the king's sons returned. Whoever keeps this vrat with single-minded devotion receives children and prosperity, their sins are destroyed and bonds broken – you treat king and pauper alike. Vasudev, son of Moreshwar, prays to you, the wish-fulfilling tree of your devotees.
