Shri Ganesh Puranaश्री गणेश पुराण

Traditionally attributed to Maharshi Vyas

The Ganesh Purana is the main scripture of the Ganapatya tradition, deeply connected with Maharashtra's Ashtavinayak temples. It has two parts: the Upasana Khanda, on the worship of Ganesh, his mantras and vrats, and the Krida Khanda, which tells of his leelas – above all the four avatars he takes in the four yugas – and ends with the Ganesh Gita.

A story from this granth

Mayureshwara and Sindhu

In the Treta Yuga the demon Sindhu, who held the nectar of immortality in his navel, terrorised the worlds. Ganesh was born to Parvati as Mayureshwara, rode a peacock into battle and destroyed him – the story remembered at Moregaon, first of the Ashtavinayak.

The Ganesh Gita

In the Dvapara Yuga, Ganesh as Gajanana taught King Varenya the path of yoga, knowledge and devotion – a dialogue closely modelled on the Bhagavad Gita, placing Ganesh as the Supreme.
