The katha in English

The same story, retold in simple English.

Once, before her bath, Mother Parvati shaped a boy from the turmeric paste on her body, breathed life into him and set him to guard the door – no one was to enter. Just then Lord Shiva arrived, and the boy stopped him too.

Shiva's ganas tried to remove the boy, but none could defeat him. Finally, in anger, Shiva struck off his head with the trishul. Seeing this, Parvati was overcome with grief and fury and threatened to destroy creation.

At the gods' pleading, Shiva sent his ganas north to bring the head of the first creature they met. They returned with an elephant calf's head, which Shiva joined to the boy's body and brought him back to life. He made him Ganapati, lord of his ganas, and blessed him to be worshipped first in every ritual. Seeing the moon on Chaturthi is avoided, because the moon once mocked Ganesh and was cursed by him.
