The same story, retold in simple English.
Before Diwali, a merchant's wife went to the forest to dig soil for plastering her home. While digging, her spade accidentally killed a porcupine cub. She was grieved but returned home.
Soon afterwards her seven sons died one after another. Heartbroken, she confessed her mistake to the elder women of the village. They advised her to repent and, on Ashtami, draw an image of Ahoi Mata with the porcupine and worship her.
She kept the fast with a sincere heart and begged Ahoi Mata's forgiveness. By the Mother's grace she was blessed with children again. Since then mothers keep the Ahoi Ashtami fast for their children's long life and wellbeing, breaking it after sighting the stars.
How to observe the vrat, and its traditional benefits.
Draw or place an image of Ahoi Mata with seven sons and a porcupine, fast through the day, worship in the evening with a kalash of water, halwa-puri and a silver 'syahu' pendant, listen to the katha and break the fast after offering arghya to the stars.
Long life, health and wellbeing of children.
