What the aarti says, in simple English.
This aarti walks through the ten days of Sharad Navratri. In the bright half of Ashvin the Mother takes her throne; from Pratipada the ghat (kalash) is installed, her root mantra is chanted, guardians are placed around her, and Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra worship her. Refrain: Raise the cry 'Udo!' for Mother Ambabai – with that cry the devotees roar; how can her glory be described? On the second day the sixty-four yoginis gather around the greatest of all, the mother of Parashuram (Renuka), her hair-parting filled with sindoor and musk. On the third day she is adorned – forehead mark, sari and blouse, pearl necklaces, pendants and yellow silk – eight-armed and beautiful. On the fourth day the all-pervading Mother looks on her worshippers with a pleased heart, and even the gods fall at her feet. On the fifth, the Upang-Lalita vow is kept; she is worshipped with arghya and padya, and nights are spent in vigil and Hari-katha. On the sixth, devotees dance the gondhal with torches in hand; for a single cowrie she returns a pearl necklace, and she is pleased when they beg the jogwa in her name. On the seventh she dwells on Saptashrungi fort amid flowers – jasmine and chrysanthemum – and catches her devotees whenever they fall into trouble. On the eighth, the eight-armed Narayani is seen standing on the Sahyadri mountains; my mind is captivated and I surrender to her, and like a mother she nourishes my heart. On the ninth the nine-day fast ends with Saptashati japa, homa and a feast of six flavours, and the priests are honoured. On the tenth the Mother rides out on her lion for Seemollanghan with fierce weapons, having slain Shumbha, Nishumbha and countless demons – and she has given Ramdas shelter at her feet.
Aartis are sung with small differences from region to region and family to family – if your family sings it differently, both are right.
