The katha in English

The same story, retold in simple English.

The demon king Mahishasura performed severe penance and won a boon from Brahma that no god or man could kill him. Drunk with power, he seized heaven and drove out the gods.

The distressed gods went to Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. From the anger and radiance of the three and of all the gods arose a divine power – Maa Durga. Shiva gave her his trishul, Vishnu his chakra, Indra his vajra and Himalaya a lion. Armed with every weapon, she rode out to battle.

Over nine days of fierce battle she destroyed Mahishasura's armies while he kept changing form – buffalo, lion, elephant. On the tenth day she slew him and restored heaven to the gods. Across these nine days her nine forms – Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidatri – are worshipped, and the tenth day is celebrated as Vijayadashami.
