The katha in English

The same story, retold in simple English.

In Satya Yuga a mighty demon named Mura defeated the gods and seized heaven. At their prayer, Lord Vishnu fought him for thousands of years. Weary, the Lord retired to rest in the Simhavati cave at Badrikashram.

Mura followed him into the cave and tried to strike the sleeping Lord. At that moment a radiant maiden emerged from Vishnu's body, challenged Mura to battle and destroyed him.

When Vishnu awoke, she told him what had happened. Pleased, he said: 'You appeared on the eleventh lunar day, so you shall be called Ekadashi. Whoever fasts on this day will be freed from sins and reach my abode.' Since then devotees give up grains on every Ekadashi and devote the day to Vishnu.
