The same story, retold in simple English.
The demon king Hiranyakashipu, armed with a powerful boon, declared himself god and banned the worship of Vishnu. Yet his own son Prahlad was a devoted follower of Vishnu and kept chanting 'Narayana' despite his father's threats.
Hiranyakashipu had Prahlad thrown from a cliff, trampled by elephants and poisoned – but each time the Lord protected him. Finally the king's sister Holika, who had a boon of immunity to fire, sat on a blazing pyre with Prahlad in her lap.
By the Lord's grace Holika was burned to ashes while Prahlad walked out unharmed. Later Vishnu appeared as Narasimha and destroyed Hiranyakashipu. Holika Dahan has since symbolised the victory of good over evil and of devotion over arrogance.
How to observe the vrat, and its traditional benefits.
Worship the Holika pyre with roli, rice, flowers, raw cotton thread, coconut and new grain; circle it while tying the thread, then light it at the auspicious muhurat and offer new wheat or barley ears into the fire.
Protection from negativity and a fresh, auspicious start to the season.
