The same story, retold in simple English.
Long ago there was a generous king whose queen disliked charity. One Thursday Brihaspati Dev came to the palace disguised as a sadhu. The queen told him she was tired of giving and asked how all their wealth could be finished. The sadhu replied: wash your hair and clothes, mop the floors and cook meat on Thursdays, and your wealth will leave.
She did exactly that, and soon the kingdom's prosperity vanished. The king went abroad to earn a living while the queen and her maid went hungry. Realising her mistake, the queen repented. Brihaspati returned and taught her the Thursday vrat: wear yellow, offer chana dal and jaggery, worship the banana tree and listen to the katha.
She kept the vrat faithfully. Gradually food and wealth returned and the king came home. From then on the whole household kept the Thursday fast. The story teaches that prosperity stays where there is generosity and faith.
How to observe the vrat, and its traditional benefits.
Wear yellow, offer chana dal, jaggery, turmeric and yellow flowers to Vishnu and the banana tree, read the katha, and eat one meal of yellow food without salt.
Blessings of Guru (Jupiter): prosperity, marriage, children and wisdom.
