The same story, retold in simple English.
King Kamsa of Mathura gave his sister Devaki in marriage to Vasudeva. As they departed, a voice from the sky declared that Devaki's eighth son would kill Kamsa. Terrified, Kamsa imprisoned the couple and killed each of their children at birth.
At midnight on Bhadrapad Krishna Ashtami, under the Rohini nakshatra, Lord Vishnu was born in the prison as the eighth child. The guards fell asleep, the chains fell open and the doors opened by themselves. Vasudeva carried the baby in a basket across the flooded Yamuna to Gokul, while Sheshnag spread his hoods to shield them from the rain and the river made way.
That same night Yashoda, wife of Nand in Gokul, had given birth to a daughter. Vasudeva left Krishna there and brought the girl back. When Kamsa tried to kill her, she rose into the sky as Yogamaya and announced that his slayer was already born in Gokul. Krishna grew up with Yashoda and Nand, and eventually destroyed Kamsa and restored dharma.
How to observe the vrat, and its traditional benefits.
Fast through the day, decorate a jhula for Bal Gopal, bathe the idol with panchamrit at midnight, offer makhan-mishri and panjiri, sing bhajans and the aarti 'Aarti Kunj Bihari Ki', and break the fast after the midnight celebration or next morning.
Removal of sins, blessings for children and devotion to Krishna.
