Meanings

Each aarti explained in simple English.

1. Jai Ambe Gauri

Victory to Mother Ambe, fair and dark Gauri, on whom Vishnu, Brahma and Shiva meditate day and night. Sindoor adorns her hair-parting, a musk tilak her forehead; her eyes are radiant and her face lovely as the moon. Her body shines like gold, dressed in red with a garland of red flowers. Riding a lion and holding sword and skull-bowl, she removes the sorrows of gods, humans and sages. With earrings and a pearl nose-ring, she glows like millions of suns and moons. She slew Shumbha, Nishumbha, Mahishasura, Dhumralochan, Chanda, Munda, Raktabeej and Madhu-Kaitabh, freeing the gods from fear. She is Brahmani, Rudrani, Kamala and the queen of Shiva, praised in the scriptures; sixty-four yoginis sing and Bhairav dances for her. She is mother and sustainer of the world, and the four-armed giver of boons fulfils every devotee's wish. Whoever sings this aarti attains happiness and prosperity.

2. Durge Durghat Bhari (Marathi Devi Aarti)

O Durga, without you worldly life is terribly hard. Mother of the orphaned, spread your compassion and end this cycle of birth and death – I have fallen defeated, remove my troubles. Victory to the Goddess who crushed Mahishasura, giver of boons to the gods, saviour and life-giver. Searching the three worlds, none is like you; the four Vedas grew tired and could not describe you, and the six schools of philosophy were swept away in debate – yet you rush to your devotee's side. With a smiling face you are pleased with your own servants; free them from suffering and cut the bonds of worldly life. O Amba, who but you can fulfil our hopes? Narhari is absorbed in the dust of your lotus feet.

3. Ashvin Shuddha Pakshi – Navratri Aarti (Udo Bola Udo Ambabai)

This aarti walks through the ten days of Sharad Navratri. In the bright half of Ashvin the Mother takes her throne; from Pratipada the ghat (kalash) is installed, her root mantra is chanted, guardians are placed around her, and Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra worship her. Refrain: Raise the cry 'Udo!' for Mother Ambabai – with that cry the devotees roar; how can her glory be described? On the second day the sixty-four yoginis gather around the greatest of all, the mother of Parashuram (Renuka), her hair-parting filled with sindoor and musk. On the third day she is adorned – forehead mark, sari and blouse, pearl necklaces, pendants and yellow silk – eight-armed and beautiful. On the fourth day the all-pervading Mother looks on her worshippers with a pleased heart, and even the gods fall at her feet. On the fifth, the Upang-Lalita vow is kept; she is worshipped with arghya and padya, and nights are spent in vigil and Hari-katha. On the sixth, devotees dance the gondhal with torches in hand; for a single cowrie she returns a pearl necklace, and she is pleased when they beg the jogwa in her name. On the seventh she dwells on Saptashrungi fort amid flowers – jasmine and chrysanthemum – and catches her devotees whenever they fall into trouble. On the eighth, the eight-armed Narayani is seen standing on the Sahyadri mountains; my mind is captivated and I surrender to her, and like a mother she nourishes my heart. On the ninth the nine-day fast ends with Saptashati japa, homa and a feast of six flavours, and the priests are honoured. On the tenth the Mother rides out on her lion for Seemollanghan with fierce weapons, having slain Shumbha, Nishumbha and countless demons – and she has given Ramdas shelter at her feet.

4. Jai Devi Jai Devi Jai Mahalakshmi (Kolhapur Ambabai Aarti)

Victory to you, Goddess Mahalakshmi – you pervade everything, in both the gross and the subtle. You dwell in Karveer (Kolhapur), mother of gods and sages, giver of boons to Shiva and beloved of Vishnu; Brahma was born from the lotus of your womb, and even the thousand-headed Shesh cannot finish singing your virtues. You hold the citron, mace and shield, radiant as the sun; a golden bowl of nectar shines in your hand; you wear a ruby girdle and bright garments, doe-eyed and moon-faced – mother of Kama himself. You are Tara, the unreachable Shakti, Gauri to Shiva's devotees; the Sankhya philosophers call you Prakriti, you are Gayatri, the seed and essence of the Vedas, and you appear as Padmavati to uphold dharma. River full of nectar, wash away sin and sorrow; destroy the fearsome demons and carry us across the ocean of worldly life; lift the veil of Maya from those who bow to you and show us your form of pure consciousness. Whatever crooked lines of karma Brahma may have written on my forehead, O Mother, wipe them away with the sole of your foot and wash them with the flowers at your feet – so prays Mukteshwar to the daughter of the Ocean of Milk.

5. Om Jai Lakshmi Mata

Victory to Mother Lakshmi, served day and night by Vishnu and Brahma. You are Uma, Rama and Brahmani – the mother of the world – meditated on by the sun and moon and praised by Narad. In the pure form of Durga you give happiness and wealth; whoever meditates on you gains prosperity and accomplishment. You dwell even in the netherworld, give all that is auspicious, reveal the fruit of karma and carry us across the ocean of worldly life. In the home where you live every virtue arrives, everything becomes possible and the mind knows no fear. Without you there are no yajnas, no clothing, no abundance of food. Born from the ocean of milk, temple of all good qualities – without you none of the fourteen treasures can be obtained. Whoever sings this aarti is filled with joy and freed of sin.

6. Ghalin Lotangan (Closing Prayer after Aarti)

I will prostrate before you, bow at your feet, see your form with my own eyes, embrace you with love, worship you with joy and wave the lamp with devotion, says Namdev. You alone are my mother, father, relative and friend; you are my knowledge and my wealth – you are my everything, O God of gods. Whatever I do with body, speech, mind, senses, intellect or by my very nature, I offer it all to the Supreme, Narayan. I worship Achyuta, Keshava, Rama, Narayana, Krishna, Damodara, Vasudeva, Hari, Shridhara, Madhava, the beloved of the gopis and the lord of Janaki, Ramachandra. The closing Hare Rama Hare Krishna mahamantra glorifies the names of the Lord.
