The same story, retold in simple English.
Veeravati was the only, much-loved sister of seven brothers. She kept her first Karwa Chauth after marriage at her parents' home. By evening she was faint from hunger and thirst. Unable to bear it, her brothers lit a lamp behind a tree and showed it to her through a sieve, making it look like the moon.
Believing the moon had risen, she offered arghya and sat down to eat. In the first morsel she found a hair, at the second she sneezed, and at the third came news that her husband had died. Weeping, she rushed to her in-laws' home and sat beside his body.
Through the year she kept every Chaturthi fast. On the next Karwa Chauth she observed the vrat with complete faith and discipline and begged Mother Parvati – Karwa Mata – for her husband's life. Pleased by her devotion, the Mother restored him to life. Since then married women keep this fast for their husbands' long life.
How to observe the vrat, and its traditional benefits.
Eat sargi before sunrise and fast without water. In the evening worship Shiva-Parvati, Ganesh and Kartikeya with a karwa (clay pot), listen to the katha in a group, and break the fast after offering arghya to the moon and seeing it through a sieve.
Long life and wellbeing of the husband; marital harmony.
