The katha in English

The same story, retold in simple English.

A wealthy merchant had everything except a child. Every Monday he fasted and worshipped Shiva. Moved by his devotion, Parvati asked Shiva to grant his wish. Shiva said a son was not in his destiny, but at Parvati's request granted one – warning that the boy would live only twelve years.

A son was born. At eleven he was sent with his maternal uncle to study in Kashi. On the way, in one town, he was made to sit as a stand-in groom at a princess's wedding to hide the real groom's disfigurement. The honest boy wrote the truth on the princess's veil and went on to Kashi. In his twelfth year, he died there.

Shiva and Parvati were passing by. Hearing the uncle's grief, Parvati pleaded again, and in recognition of the merchant's unbroken devotion Shiva restored the boy to life. He returned, formally married the same princess and reached home, where his parents – who had resolved to give up their lives if he did not return – gave thanks to Shiva. Since then the Monday vrat is believed to bless families with children and fulfil sincere wishes.
