Meanings

Each aarti explained in simple English.

1. Jai Devi Mangalagauri (Mangalagaur Aarti)

Summary – Victory to Goddess Mangalagauri; I wave the aarti before you on a golden plate, with lamps of jewels, wicks of rubies and flames of diamonds. The auspicious Goddess appeared and was pleased with the short-lived prince, and the princess waited for her blessing of saubhagya. Women bring jasmine buds, sixteen kinds of flowers, sixteen blades of durva and sixteen kinds of leaves – jai, jui, abolya, shevanti, nagchapha, parijat, nandet and tagar – for her puja; they cook rice, moong dal and khichdi and serve their husbands with devotion. Drums sound, and bangles, armlets and ear-ornaments adorn the Mother. After bathing, she sits in silence in a silk blouse and a milk-white sari and begins the worship. The five-flamed aarti burns with camphor wicks on golden plates; incense, lamp and a feast of six flavours are offered. The last stanza tells how the three set out quickly for Kashi, the mother forgot to immerse the Mangalagaur, came back, and found the self-born Amba in a temple of gold with diamond pillars and a dome of pearls.

2. Jaidevi Haritalike (Hartalika Aarti)

Victory to Haritalika – Parvati, Ambika, our friend – I wave the aarti before you, flame of the lamp of knowledge. As Sati, half of Shiva, you went to your father's sacrifice, were insulted there and vanished into the sacrificial fire. You were born again as the lovely daughter of Himalaya and at once began great penance – sitting among five fires, inhaling smoke, head bowed, fasting again and again – to win Shambhu as your husband. You kept this vrat for the sake of all people and married Dhurjati (Shiva) once more; protect me in times of trouble. How can I, Narayan, with my small mind, describe your virtues? Show me your feet and free me from birth and death.

3. Jai Parvati Mata

Victory to Mother Parvati, the eternal Goddess who is Brahman itself and the giver of auspicious fruit. You crush the enemy clans like lotuses and protect your servants; mother of the world and its very life, even Vishnu and Shiva sing your virtues. You ride a lion and wear earrings, while the wives of the gods sing your fame and dance to the rhythm. In Satya Yuga, beautiful and virtuous, you were called Sati; you were born again in the home of Himalaya and played with your friends. You tore apart Shumbha and Nishumbha, taking a thousand-armed form with the discus in hand. You are the Mother in the form of creation, rejoicing with Shiva; Nandi and Bhringi play the veena and the whole world is filled with joy. The gods bring you their prayers, clapping and singing with hearts full of colour. Whoever sings this aarti of the Mother, composed by Shri Pratap, remains ever happy and gains joy and prosperity.

4. Ghalin Lotangan (Closing Prayer after Aarti)

I will prostrate before you, bow at your feet, see your form with my own eyes, embrace you with love, worship you with joy and wave the lamp with devotion, says Namdev. You alone are my mother, father, relative and friend; you are my knowledge and my wealth – you are my everything, O God of gods. Whatever I do with body, speech, mind, senses, intellect or by my very nature, I offer it all to the Supreme, Narayan. I worship Achyuta, Keshava, Rama, Narayana, Krishna, Damodara, Vasudeva, Hari, Shridhara, Madhava, the beloved of the gopis and the lord of Janaki, Ramachandra. The closing Hare Rama Hare Krishna mahamantra glorifies the names of the Lord.
